James LaRue Avery, fully named, was born on November 27, 1945 in Pughsville, Virginia. His career in the entertainment industry spanned from 1980 to 2013. He is most renowned for his role as Judge Philip Banks in the TV series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” (1990 – 1996) and also played Alonzo Sparks in “Sparks” (1996 – 1998), among other significant roles. Apart from TV, Avery was involved in various big-screen productions and voice-overs.

Initially from Atlantic City, New Jersey, he joined the United States Navy after high school and served from 1968 to 1969 during the Vietnam War. His big-screen debut happened in 1980 with an uncredited role in the film “The Blues Brothers” directed by John Landis. He continued to play important roles in various films and TV series until his death in 2013.
