Brendan Rodgers Blames Manchester United Fans for Harry Maguire Criticism

According to former Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers, much of the criticism surrounding Manchester United defender Harry Maguire can be attributed to the club’s fans.

Maguire has faced scrutiny at Old Trafford over the past year after falling down the pecking order and losing the captaincy.

However, England manager Gareth Southgate continues to select Maguire, who has consistently performed well for the national team.

Maguire has played a key role in England’s success, including reaching the final of Euro 2020 and the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

His most recent appearance for England was in a 3-1 victory over Scotland at Hampden Park.

However, Maguire faced criticism once again as he scored an own goal against Scotland.

Rodgers, who coached Maguire during their time together at Leicester City, has come to the player’s defense, stating that it is unfortunate that the center-back has faced such intense scrutiny from Manchester United fans.

“I know Harry [Maguire] well from our time together, and it’s a real shame, to be honest,” said Rodgers, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

“He is a good guy and a top-class player. The focus and noise around him have been created more by fans of his own club, which has spilled over to other supporters.

“I attended the recent match (England vs Scotland at Hampden Park) and this is a player who was part of the World Cup team, so he isn’t a bad player at all. If you need someone by your side during tough times, it’s him.

“He is a great man, honest to the game. I understand why Gareth picks him. He has been fantastic for England, a real leader for the young players.

“He is mentally strong and will prove throughout his career that he is a very good player. You don’t go from being in the World Cup team, recognized as a top international player, to being ridiculed.”
