Overview of Christiane Amanpour

Born on January 12, 1958, in London, England, Christiane Amanpour is a renowned journalist and television host of British-Iranian descent. She is best known as the Chief International Correspondent for CNN and the host of CNN International’s nightly interview program “Amanpour” from 2009 to 2015. Amanpour is currently working as ABC’s Global Affairs Anchor. Her career in journalism took off in 1983.

Amanpour’s wealth has been estimated to be $12.5 million as of late 2016. Her annual earnings are reported to be around $2 million.

Amanpour spent her early years in Tehran, Iran, before moving to England and attending the Holy Cross Convent in Chalfont St. Peters, Buckinghamshire. She continued her education at the New Hall School in Chelmsford, Essex, and further pursued journalism at the University of Rhode Island’s Harrington School of Communication and Media, where she obtained a BA in Journalism in 1983.

Following her graduation, Amanpour secured a position at CNN’s foreign desk in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1986, she covered the Gulf War and later reported on the fall of communism in Eastern Europe. Her coverage of the Iraq’s occupation of Kuwait in 1990 and the Bosnian War further solidified her career at CNN. Despite facing critique for her delivery during the Bosnian War due to professional objectivity, she continued to ascend in her career.

From 1992 to 2010, Amanpour served as CNN’s chief international correspondent and also anchored “Amanpour” from 2009 to 2015. During her tenure at CNN, she interviewed notable figures such as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and French President Jacques Chirac, among others. Her interviewees also included prominent personalities like Hillary Clinton, Moammar Gadhafi, and Angelina Jolie.

Throughout her career, Amanpour reported from various global hotspots including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, and Rwanda. She also worked as a correspondent for CBS’ “60 Minutes” from 1999 to 2005. In 2010, she transitioned to ABC before returning to CNN in 2012, where she continues her work to this day.

Besides her journalistic work, Amanpour has made on-screen appearances in movies such as “The Pink Panther 2” (2009), “Iron Man 2” (2010), and “Trash” (2014). Notably, she appeared in Ben Stiller’s “Zoolander 2” (2016).

1[on being awarded the Order of the British Empire] I’ll tell you something odd. I grew up a monarchist in Iran. It was all I knew. And I respected the British monarchy. But in the interim I’ve tried to put the spotlight on people who are struggling for their rights, or the right to stay alive, and that really affected me when it came to standing in front of the Queen to receive the honor. Because I couldn’t curtsy – even though I grew up curtsying. I bowed instead.
2If I had been reporting in World War II, would I have had to say, in the name of objectivity, ‘Poor Mr. Hitler, he has a point’? No, you don’t play footsie with the most appalling crimes known to humanity. I realized in Bosnia that, even if it means you’re going to be accused of not being fair, you have to tell the truth.
3[on being a war correspondent] There’s a certain kind of person who’s attracted to being an astro-physicist or a soldier or taking risks at sports. We need the adrenaline to keep us safe. We’re not heroin addicts. If you want us to be the eyes and ears in our field – not people spinning in the blogosphere or sitting in armchairs opining about what’s going on in the rest of the world – you need people who are willing to go to the battlefield.
4U.S. soldiers, with whom I now have more than a passing acquaintance, joke that they track my movements in order to know where they will be deployed next.
5It occurred to me that I have spent almost every working day of the past ten years living in a state of repressed fear.
6But 17 years ago, I arrived at CNN with a suitcase, with my bicycle, and with about 100 dollars.
