Communities in Abia cautioned by monarchs against the use of illegal drugs during traditional festival
During this year’s Igba Ekpe festival, the three autonomous communities in Osah Ibeku, Umuahia North LGA of Abia State, have collectively prohibited the use of illegal drugs, including Mkpurumiri.
Additionally, the traditional rulers of Osah, Ohabiri Umuchime na Amanso, and Eziama na Mgbaja autonomous communities have enforced a ban on the use or display of weapons.
In a widely circulated notice bearing the signatures of Eze Joshua Akomas of Osah, Eze Abel Iheanyichukwu (Ochima 1) of Ohabiri Umuchime na Amanso autonomous community, and Eze Chiabuotu Emelike of Eziama na Mgbaja autonomous community, the traditional rulers and community leaders urged indigenes and other guests to maintain peaceful conduct during the Ekpe festival.
Emphasizing the prevailing peace and security in their lands, the monarchs expressed their determination to uphold the tranquility and cautioned against any disturbance.
The joint message conveyed a clear stance, stating, “The practice of cultism and the sale of hard drugs such as Indian Hemp, Mkpurumiri, etc., will not be tolerated. Furthermore, carrying of machetes, guns, and bottled drinks is prohibited, and offenders will face repercussions, including a fine of fifty thousand naira,” declared the royal fathers.
Many monarchs of various autonomous communities in Abia have been implementing proactive measures to ensure crime-free environments, particularly during the festive periods.
It is worth noting that Governor Alex Otti reiterated his warning in a new year broadcast to traditional rulers and other community leaders, cautioning against allowing criminal activities in their domains, and emphasizing that those harboring criminals would face consequences.
