Controversy Arises as Bride Declines to Recite Wedding Vows about Obeying Her Husband
When an African American bride chose not to recite a portion of her wedding vows, a video documenting the incident quickly spread on social media.
The pastor recited the vows to the bride line by line, but when it reached the section concerning her obedience to her spouse, she remained silent.
While she agreed to stand by him in sickness and in health, she refused to echo the part about obedience when the pastor said, “To love, cherish, and obey.”
In response, the bride humorously inquired whether they had discussed it during couple’s therapy. The pastor assured her they had and presented the option to either repeat the line or proceed without it. She chose to move forward without it.
