FIFA allocated 26% of 2022 World Cup’s budget, $440m for prize money
In Qatar, FIFA has dedicated $1.696 billion for the World Cup, with the largest share, $440 million, allocated for prize money, representing 26% of the budget. This marks a 10% increase from the 2018 figures. Each of the 32 teams participating in the tournament is guaranteed a minimum of $9 million, with a total of $144 million to be shared among the 16 teams exiting the group stage. Furthermore, the second round dropouts will receive $13 million each, amounting to $104 million for 8 teams. The quarter-finalists will take home $17 million each, while the fourth-placed team will earn $25 million and the second runners-up will pocket $27 million. The winning team will receive $42 million, and the runners-up will get $30 million, along with an additional $1.5 million each for preparation costs. Additionally, operational expenses account for $324 million, which is 19% of the total budget. FIFA has also set aside $247 million, 15% of the funds, for the television audience, as it anticipates a potential viewership of over 5 billion people for this year’s tournament.
