Chandler attended Englewood High School in Chicago’s south side. Early in his career, he was part of the band The Gaytones, and later became the lead singer of The Dukays, performing alongside Earl Edwards. Upon his return from the US Army in 1960, he continued making music with The Dukays, culminating in successful releases such as “Nite Owl.” His solo release, “Duke of Earl,” sold a million copies in its first month and earned him a gold certification from the RIAA.

In 1963, Chandler signed with Constellation Records after departing from Vee-Jay Records. His collaboration with Curtis Mayfield produced several hits, but the company faced bankruptcy in 1966. Chandler then worked with Chess Records and Brunswick Records.

In the early ’70s, Chandler entered music production and founded his company and record labels, producing hits like “Backfield in Motion” for Mel & Tim. His producing abilities were acknowledged with a Producer of the Year Award in 1970. Additionally, “Groovy Situation,” produced by Chandler and released by Mercury Records, reached the top positions on the Billboard charts.

Further collaborations with Curtis Mayfield followed, including productions for The Impressions. Chandler also ventured into disco music in the late ’70s, creating chart-topping hits such as “Get Down” and “When You’re #1.” He was later appointed as the executive vice president of Chi Sound Records. Chandler’s iconic track “Duke of Earl” has been featured multiple times, including on the soundtrack of “Hairspray.” He continues to perform in the US and occasionally in Europe.

On a personal note, Chandler was married to Lillie J. Kennard until her passing in 2013, and they had one son together.
