John Eleuthère du Pont, who was born on the 22nd of November, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, was known as a philanthropist, philatelist, ornithologist, and sports enthusiast. He was also the heir to the fortune of the du Pont family and a great supporter of wrestling and amateur sports in the USA. He was convicted of third-degree murder in 1997 and was imprisoned until his death on the 9th of December, 2010.

At the time of his death, John Eleuthère du Pont was reportedly worth around $200 million. His will dictated that 80% of his estate was to be transferred to the wrestler Valentin Yordanov, who was trained by du Pont, and his relatives. However, his relatives fiercely contested the will.

John was the youngest of four children raised by William Du Pont Jr. and Jean Liseter Austin. He grew up at Liseter Hall, a mansion built in 1922 in Philadelphia, which was inherited by his parents upon their marriage. His parents divorced when he was only two years old. In addition to his three siblings, John du Pont had a half brother, William Bridge III, from his father’s second marriage. He graduated from Haverford College in 1957 and belonged to the fraternity Zeta Psi at the University of Pennsylvania, although he dropped out before completing his first year. Du Pont later graduated from the University of Miami in 1965 with a Bachelors degree in Science in Zoology, and completed his studies with a doctorate in natural sciences at Villanova University in 1973.

John du Pont authored three books and founded the Museum of Natural History of Delaware in 1972. He also established a wrestling team at his farm named Foxcatcher Farm. His life and the events leading to his imprisonment and death were the basis for the 2014 biographical sports and true crime drama film “Foxcatcher”, where actor Steve Carell portrayed John du Pont.

In his personal life, John du Pont married occupational therapist Gale Wenk in 1983, but the marriage was annulled within half a year. He had no children.
