The Hamas War: Germany Extends Support to Israel

In response to the unprecedented killing of Israeli civilians by the Islamist militant group Hamas, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has offered further support to his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant.

Germany has approved the use of two combat drones, the Heron TP, by Israel in its attacks on the Gaza Strip.

The German Ministry of Defence announced the approval of Israel’s request to deploy unmanned aerial vehicles in the fight against Hamas.

Currently, the German armed forces, the Bundeswehr, lease five of these drones from the Israeli arms manufacturer.

Among the five drones, two are currently located in Israel, where German soldiers are being trained to operate them.

According to German news magazine Der Spiegel, the training of German pilots has been suspended while the drones are redeployed.

During a meeting of NATO defence ministers on Wednesday, Pistorius stated that if the situation deteriorates further, Israel will consult with its partners, and Germany is ready to provide assistance, including humanitarian aid, upon Israel’s request.

Previously, Israeli officials had indicated that they do not require military or technical support, but rather political support, Pistorius added.

Hamas, the militant group governing Gaza, initiated a large-scale attack against Israel on Saturday, prompting ongoing Israeli airstrikes on the densely populated coastal enclave.

Over 1,000 casualties have been reported on each side. (NAN)
