Thomas Stephen Monaghan – The Entrepreneur

Thomas Stephen Monaghan, born on March 25, 1937, in Ann Arbor, Michigan USA, is a renowned businessman and philanthropist. He is recognized as the founder of Domino’s Pizza which he later sold to focus on Catholic philanthropy and political causes. Additionally, he was the owner of the Detroit Tigers baseball team in the MLB.

Tom’s net worth is estimated at approximately $500 million as of 2016.

Tom Monaghan’s Path to Success

After losing his father at the age of four, Tom and his brother were placed in a Catholic orphanage, where they were raised by Polish nuns. Despite being expelled from the seminary during his adolescence, he recognized the significance of money and decided to pursue a business career. His entrepreneurial journey began with the purchase of a pizzeria named Dominicks for less than $900. Years later, he took over the business completely, following a significant gesture of goodwill towards his brother.

In 1968, Monaghan opened a new store in Burlington under the name of Domino’s Pizza. His business flourished, leading to the establishment of 1,100 branches by 1983. Along the way, Tom amassed considerable assets, including the ownership of the Detroit Tigers, a collection of luxury cars, and architectural works by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Monaghan underwent a profound spiritual transformation in 1989 after reading C.S. Lewis’ book “Mere Christianity”, which compelled him to reevaluate his life and make a decision to sell Domino’s Pizza in 1998. Presently, he is dedicated to his real estate project, Ave Maria Town, and university.

Ave Maria Town, located in Florida, USA, is a Catholic community developed by Monaghan. The town boasts various amenities including schools, a university, a shopping center, a golf course, tennis courts, offices, a pharmacy, and a church. Monaghan aims to eventually have 25,000 inhabitants in the town.

Despite his philanthropic and business endeavors, Monaghan has not been immune to controversies, particularly regarding the Ave Maria Law School. The school supported Betsy Hansen, a high school student, in a legal dispute concerning freedom of expression limitations. Notably, Tom is married to Marjorie Zybach, and they have four daughters.
