Update: Rapper Young Thug makes first court appearance on gang charges as DA says YSL gang allegations deserve ‘maximum penalties’

Young Thug, the American rapper also known as Jeffery Lamar Williams, has gone to court after being arrested on Monday. He was one of 28 defendants indicted on 56 counts in Georgia. Young Thug appeared in court via video before the Fulton County Magistrate judge on May 10.

DA Dani Wallis has emphasized the severity of the allegations against the YSL gang, stating that the gang was responsible for a significant portion of violent crimes in Atlanta. She indicated that regardless of notoriety or fame, anyone committing crimes in Fulton County, Georgia will be targeted by the District Attorney’s office. The DA also mentioned that Young Thug’s social media and song lyrics were instrumental in the investigation.

The prosecutors have accused Williams of co-founding the YSL gang in 2012 and promoting it through his music and social media presence. He was arrested on charges of conspiracy to violate Georgia’s RICO Act and participating in a criminal street gang.

It’s expected that Williams’ social media posts and song lyrics will be used as evidence during the trial. The case also involves Sergio Kitchens, known as “Gunna,” who is associated with YSL and was bailed out by Young Thug in 2021. DA Fani Willis has highlighted the focus on targeting gangs, irrespective of the individuals involved.

The YSL gang is reportedly affiliated with the national Bloods gang and is primarily active in southeast Atlanta, expanding into the surrounding metro area. The indictment links the gang to various illegal activities including drug dealing and murder.
